Happy Tuesday y’all! Last week was a busy month in my household. Between Mother’s Day, my oldest daughter’s birthday, and my anniversary there wasn’t much time to think about blogging. But I did get a few books as presents. So this week I’m sharing some of the recent additions to my physical TBR. Sorry, Jana, but this week I’m going rogue!

Many of these books were on various wish lists I have. My youngest daughter did go rogue with one book though. I wonder if you’ll be able to guess which one! Now let’s check out those recent additions to my physical TBR!

But then a body turns up at the site of her last job—murdered in a way that only someone like Teagan could have pulled off. She’s got 24 hours to clear her name—and it’s not just her life at stake. If she can’t unravel the conspiracy in time, her hometown of Los Angeles will be in the crosshairs of an underground battle that’s on the brink of exploding.

Dead Dead Girls by Nekesa Afia

  • Genre: Historical Fictions, Mystery
  • Release Date: June 2021

Harlem, 1926. Young Black women like Louise Lloyd are ending up dead.

Following a harrowing kidnapping ordeal when she was in her teens, Louise is doing everything she can to maintain a normal life. She’s succeeding, too. She spends her days working at Maggie’s Café and her nights at the Zodiac, Harlem’s hottest speakeasy. Louise’s friends, especially her girlfriend, Rosa Maria Moreno, might say she’s running from her past and the notoriety that still stalks her, but don’t tell her that.

When a girl turns up dead in front of the café, Louise is forced to confront something she’s been trying to ignore—two other local Black girls have been murdered in the past few weeks. After an altercation with a police officer gets her arrested, Louise is given an ultimatum: She can either help solve the case or wind up in a jail cell. Louise has no choice but to investigate and soon finds herself toe-to-toe with a murderous mastermind hell-bent on taking more lives, maybe even her own.

Back in the Burbs by Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn

  • Genre: Contemporary, Women’s Fiction, Romance
  • Release Date: March 2021

Ever have one of those days where life just plain sucks? Welcome to my last three months—ever since I caught my can’t-be-soon-enough ex-husband cheating with his paralegal. I’m thirty-five years old, and I’ve lost my NYC apartment, my job, my money, and frankly, my dignity.

But the final heartache in the suck sandwich of my life? My great-aunt Maggie died. The only family member who’s ever gotten me.

Even after death, though, she’s helping me get back up. She’s willed me the keys to a house in the burbs, of all places, and dared me to grab life by the family jewels. Well, I’ve got the vise grips already in hand (my ex should take note) and I’m ready to fight for my life again.

Too bad that bravado only lasts as long as it takes to drive into Huckleberry Hills. And see the house.
There are forty-seven separate HOA violations, and I feel them all in my bones. Honestly, I’m surprised no one’s “accidentally” torched the house yet. I want to, and I’ve only been standing in front of it for five minutes. But then my hot, grumpy neighbor tells me to mow the lawn first and I’m just…done. Done with men too sexy for their own good and done with anyone telling me what to do ever again.

First rule of surviving the burbs? There is nothing that YouTube and a glass of wine can’t conquer.

One Woman’s War by Christine Wells

  • Genre: Historical Fiction, Mystery
  • Release Date: October 2022

World War II London: When Victoire “Paddy” Bennett first walks into the Admiralty’s Room 39, home to the Intelligence Division, all the bright and lively young woman expects is a secretarial position to the charismatic Commander Ian Fleming. But soon her job is so much more, and when Fleming proposes a daring plot to deceive the Germans about Allied invasion plans he requests the newlywed Paddy’s help. She jumps at the chance to work as an agent in the field, even after the operation begins to affect her marriage. But could doing her duty for King and country come at too great a cost?
Socialite Friedl Stöttinger is a beautiful Austrian double agent determined to survive in wartime England, which means working for MI-5, investigating fifth column activity among the British elite at parties and nightclubs. But Friedl has a secret–some years before, she agreed to work for German Intelligence and spy on the British. When her intelligence work becomes fraught with danger, she must choose whether to remain loyal to the British and risk torture and execution by the Nazis, or betray thousands of men to their deaths.
Soon, the lives of these two extraordinarily brave women will collide, as each travels down a road of deception and danger leading to one of the greatest battles of World War II.

  1. That first one sounds great. You don’t see that many stories with telekinetic powers seems like. And I’m a huge fan of that holiday anthology. Thought it was awesome!

  2. I remember enjoying “Hallowe’en”. Hope you can get to it soon! The soccer in Japan one also sounds interesting. I’d never thought of sports manga before!

    1. This is the second sports manga series I’ve been given. The first is Haikyu which is about volleyball (which is one of my favorite sports).

  3. I love getting new books and it looks like you got some really fun ones. Happy reading! And thanks for commenting on my blog earlier. 😀

  4. The first book sounds cool! I think I’m going to go add it to my TBR pile now.
Happy reading, and I hope you have a great rest of your week!

  5. I love that you got so many bookish presents–they’re the best kind! And again, I really hope you enjoy My True Love. I think it’s perfect for the winter season!

    1. Nope! My daughter is a huge fan of manga, and does all she can to get me to read it.

  6. I’ve yet to read any Agatha Christie. I really need to get on that lol
