Now, let’s look at my most anticipated Canadian 2026 releases!
Is This a Cry for Help? by Emily R. Austin

- Genre: Contemporary
- Anticipated Release Date: January 13, 2026
Darcy’s life turned out better than she could have ever imagined. She is a librarian at the local branch, while her wife, Joy, runs a book-binding service. Between the two of them, there is no more room on their shelves with their ample book collections, various knick-knacks and bobbles, and dried bouquets. Rounding out their ideal life is two cats and a sun-soaked house by the lake.
But when Darcy receives the news that her ex-boyfriend, Ben, has passed away, she spirals into a pit of guilt and regret, resulting in a mental breakdown and medical leave from the library. When she returns to work, she is met by unrest in her community and protests surrounding intellectual freedom, resulting in a call for book bans and a second look at the branch’s upcoming DEI programs.
Through the support of her community, colleagues, and the personal growth that results from examining her previous relationships, Darcy comes into her own agency and the truest version of herself. Is This a Cry for Help? not only offers a moving portrait of queer life after coming of age but also powerfully explores questions about sexuality, community, and the importance of libraries.

Three Bengal Kittens by Philipp Schott

- Genre: Mystery
- Anticipated Release Date: April 14, 2026
Dr. Peter Bannerman’s brother Sam takes in three Bengal kittens after the previous owner, his neighbor in a Winnipeg north end apartment building, is found dead. The death was originally thought to be due to accidental autoerotic asphyxiation, but after investigation, Sam is arrested and charged with his neighbor’s murder.
Sam suffers from several mental health conditions, but Peter refuses to believe that he is capable of killing someone, so he sets out to prove his innocence. Sam, however, is more concerned about one of the kittens who has gone missing. With the help of his talented sniffer dog, Pippin, Peter tries to find the kitten, as well as evidence that someone else murdered the neighbor.
Peter talks to the other people in Sam’s building, and several appear to be plausible alternative killers. However, by that time, Sam, still in custody, begins to rave about ghosts being the real murderers and insists Peter investigate that. Despite not believing in ghosts (not in the slightest), he has a terrifying experience while spending the night in Sam’s apartment.
The situation rapidly spirals, putting Peter and Pippin in peril and ultimately revealing a story of revenge served cold from decades ago and continents away.

I’m going to add The Chambermaid’s Key to my tbr. Thanks for sharing!
Ooh, I’ve only heard of one of the books on your list (the first) but the Eleanor Roosevelt mystery book sounds kinda up my alley. 👀 Love that cover too! Hope you enjoy all of these whenever you get to them!
I may have to add The Winter Witch to my TBR!
Thanks for dropping by my post! I’ve never heard of Montreal being considered particularly holy, despite the amazing cathedral! I might have to check out The Winter Witch since historical fantasy is like my jam! Great list here!
A Widow’s Charm looks amazing!
If you’d like to visit, here’s my TTT: https://thebooklorefairyreads.wordpress.com/2026/01/12/top-ten-tuesday-the-most-anticipated-books-releasing-in-the-first-half-of-2026/
This Is a Cry for Help sounds like it is right up my alley. Is there any connection to Pride and Prejudice, I wonder. With a character named Darcy and an author with a name similar Austin-Austen.
I don’t believe there’s any particular connection the Pride and Prejudice. I’ve ready read it, you can find my review here: https://readbakecreate.com/is-this-a-cry-for-help-by-emily-austin-book-review/
Ellen’s book looks interesting! May be one I need to look into (because we always find more to add to that TBR, right!?). Thanks a bunch for visiting my list today!
All unknown to me but what a great list. I think i’d pick A Widow’s Charm from it, sounds like my kind of read. Great list for anyone doing a Canadian reading challenge.
Maybe This Once sounds fun. Hope you’ll love all of these!
These all sound like a bunch of fun. I hope you enjoy them!
Eleanor and the South Beach Beach Murders sounds good! Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Love that you’re featuring Canadian authors! Kelley Armstrong is probably my favorite Canadian author! I’ll look into these other books, too!
Is This A Cry For Help is one that I’ve been seeing around a lot! I think I’m going to pick that one up. I hope you enjoy all of these.
I’ve had the good fortune to read it already, you can find my review here: https://readbakecreate.com/is-this-a-cry-for-help-by-emily-austin-book-review/
The Ellen Yardley book looks good. All of your books look good. I hope you enjoy them when you have a chance to read them.
That Nyugen title sounds intense!
This is such a good way of cutting the list down so it’s not an overwhelming
This is the second time Eleanor Roosevelt has been made into a fictional slueth! I read her son Eilliot’s [probably ghost written] books in the 80s. And a new Mai Nyguen? I loved Sunshine Nails [ok not so much the speech the end, but the story!] I’ll look for that one for sure.
Ironically, Eleanor is more of a side character than the main detective. Though in the first book, she did play a role.
That’s like the so-called “Mitford Murders” in which the six Mitford sisters have a side role while their former nurse maid is the sleuth.
I saw a good review for Is this a Cry for Help somewhere…
I hope you‘ll enjoy all your choices!
I haven’t heard of most of these, so thanks for the heads-up! I’ll keep an eye out for the ones that sound like ones I would enjoy.
Happy TTT!
