I put together a list of some of my family’s favorite children’s books from over the years. It’s funny how some of my favorite books as a child became my kids’ favorite books when they were younger.

The Snow Day

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

In this Caldecott winning picture book from 1963, we follow a little boy as he experiences a snowy day.

Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton

This story follows Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne as they travel around and help build canals, roads, skyscrapers. Until they are suddenly out of work due to new machines working faster than they can. His last chance to save Mary Anne from the scrapyard is found in the town of Popperville. Can they do it?

This book was originally published in 1939.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff & Felicia Bond

What happens if you give a mouse a cookie? Well according to this book he is going to want a glass of milk. And from there? Lots of running around, as there are consequences for your actions. Be prepared to giggle, and feeling a lit repetitive, because if your kids are like mine you will be reading this book over and over.

Go Dog Go

Go, Dog, Go! by PD Eastman

This book is part of the Dr. Seuss Beginner Books and was first published in 1961. The words are simple and easy for kids to read, for example: red, blue, green, dog, go, tree, party, and hat. The pictures on each page give the necessary clues to the early reader.

My youngest actually took this book to school as part of a show-and-tell when she was 5, and proceeded to read it to her class. Several years later, and we still quote the book.

Click Clack Moo

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin & Betsy Lewin

Poor Farmer Brown! His cows have gotten ahold of a typewriter, and are leaving messages for him about their care.

This book is an easy read, that is enjoyable for both parents and children. It was first published in 1999.

Freight Train

Freight Train by Donald Crews

This Caldecott Honor Book was first published in 1979.

It is a basic book that teaches colors and the various train cars. It is easy for most kids to understand.

What are some of your family’s favorite children’s books? Have you ever read any of these? Or shared them with others in your life?
