Happy Tuesday, y’all! This week, Jana from That Artsy Reader Girl has handed this week’s Top Ten Tuesday over to Jennifer from Funk-N-Fiction. And what topic did Jennifer come up with? She wants us to brag about authors from or books set in our state or country. This is such an easy topic for me, as I always strive to highlight Canadian authors! My only conundrum was narrowing the list down to ten authors. I love celebrating Canadian authors and sharing those who I think deserve love and recognition around the world.

Celebrating Canadian Authors: Ten Authors from Canada

I went through my Goodreads shelves; thankfully, I have one labeled ‘Canada,’ and my ‘Highly Anticipated Releases’ post to compile my list of authors. All together, I had over 20 I could share with you. I thought that would be a bit overwhelming, so I asked my husband and daughter how I should narrow the list down. They agreed that I should share a mix of authors from across Canada, some of whom you may have heard of, and others you may not have heard of.

All of the authors’ images are from their website, which are linked to their names. All book titles are linked to Goodreads.

Now let’s start celebrating Canadian authors.

Tom Ryan–Nova Scotia

Best known for his YA books, Ryan’s adult debut, The Treasure Hunters Club, is a mystery full of twists and turns.

M.E Girard–Quebec

Girard’s books focus on queer teens trying to find their voices and their place in their communities. I was introduced to her debut book, Girl Mans Up, by seeing a review written by Rick Riordan.

Cherie Dimaline–Ontario

Dimaline’s stories feature Indigenous characters and are told from Indigenous perspectives. Her debut novel, The Marrow Thieves, was named as one of the Best YA Books of all Time by TIME magazine. VenCo is a fantastic witchy tale featuring a strong female cast.

Uzma Jalaluddin–Ontario

Jalaluddin refuses to be confined to just one genre. She’s co-written a holiday-themed romance, Three Holidays and a Wedding. She has written contemporaries, like Hana Khan Carries On. And later this year, she has a cozy mystery coming out!

Jennifer Robson–Ontario

Robson is a historical fiction queen! She has written books set during World War I (Somewhere in France), World War II (Our Darkest Night), and even the post-war era (Coronation Year)

Philipp Schott–Manitoba

Philipp Schott

A veterinarian by day, a writer by night, Schott has written mysteries (Fifty-Four Pigs), nonfiction (The Accidental Veterinarian), and historical fiction (The Willow Wren).

Zarqa Nawaz–Saskatchewan

Nawaz uses her platform as a writer, producer, presenter, and public speaker to help inform and educate people. She does with the wit and humor, as showcased in Jameela Green Ruins Everything.

Jessica Johns–Alberta

Johns’ debut novel, Bad Cree, uses Indigenous folklore to tell the story of a young woman trying to come to terms with the legacy of violence her family, community, and the land has suffered.

Sophie Sullivan–British Columbia

Sophie Sullivan

If Robson is the historical fiction queen, Sullivan is the romance queen! Whether you’re looking for fake dating (Can’t Help Falling in Love) or second chance romance (Get Lost with You), Sullivan is the author for you.

Elinor Florence–British Columbia

Author Elinor Florence, bestselling writer.

A historical fiction writer, Florence tells stories of the past with a Canadian connection. Whether it is about a prairie girl who finds herself serving in the air force during WWII (Bird’s Eye View) or a woman trying to find a home that is all hers (Finding Flora), Florence’s books feature strong women.

How is that for celebrating Canadian authors? Are there any on the list that you’ve read before? Any that you’re interesting in reading now? What are some authors from your area that you want to celebrate?

  1. I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t read any of these! Isn’t it odd how there’s only a few authors who experience big success outside their own countries? Of course, maybe these people have and I’m just unaware!

    1. Don’t feel bad. There were several on your list that I was unfamiliar with. With so many books published and released on a regular basis, there’s bound to be something that gets missed.

  2. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve read from Cherie Dimaline and need to catch up on her work.

  3. Ooh, I had no idea Uzma Jalaluddin was Canadian! 😍 Neither did I know Sophie Sullivan was either, but I still haven’t read any of her books yet, lol. I’ve heard of Cherie Dimaline and I do want to check out her debut because I’ve heard great things about it. Awesome post!

    1. I’ve only read one book from Dimaline, but I do hope to read more of her books. Sullivan writes fun, clean, rom-coms. I can’t wait to read the Christmas book she’s releasing this fall. As for Jalaluddin, she’s a born and raised Canadian.

  4. I have actually heard of a few of these! I have even read one of Sophie’s and I remember reading about a couple of the others. 🙂 Thanks for the feature and reminder about some of the books – and thanks a bunch for visiting my list!

  5. More great Canadians! What a good post! This American, stuck in a red state, but not red, and embarassed by how your brand me PM was treated….well, back to books. I’ve read Jennifer Robson and Uzma Jalaluddin–but didn’t know I’d missed a book by Uzma! I’ll look for it. I loved Three Holidays and a Wedding!

  6. I think I only heard of Uzma Jalaluddin, but I haven’t read any book. I also think of Carley Fortune as her books are also set in Canada.

    1. Carley Fortune is also from Canada. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy the book I read of hers.

  7. Great list Pam. I did not realize that Sophie Sullivan or Jennifer Robson were Canadian. My list included ten different authors. I am going to put together a running list of Canadian authors. I have found so many more today.

    1. I just goes to show that our taste in books is as varied as the landscapes around us!

  8. What a great list! I’m Canadian, but I don’t keep a super close eye on Canadian authors – it’s more I read the book I’m interested in, and it’s a nice bonus if they’re Canadian. So there are definitely a few on your list I’ve not heard of, and only one (Cherie Dimaline’s Marrow Thieves) that I have read! Fantastic work, and I like that you included which province they’re from as well.

  9. Great list! I like that you went for authors from different provinces. There are some really awesome books written by Canadian authors, and I love the writing of Cherie Dimaline. I’m slowly working my way through her books, and loved VenCo!
