Did you know January is Hobby Month? I know I didn’t, but in a lot of ways, it makes a lot of sense. I mean January is about new beginnings and new habits, so why not include hobbies in there?
According to Merriam-Webster, a hobby is “a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engages in especially for relaxation.”
That means something one does for fun or enjoyment that isn’t part of their normal business day.
We all know that hobbies are a great way to pass the time, and for some people actually increases our creativity. I know for me often a walk around the block is enough to get the creative juices flowing, even if it’s just to loosen me up to write my blog posts. But have you ever wondered what some of the world’s most famous authors’ hobbies were? I did a little research and found that some have some seriously cool (and unusual) hobbies.

Agatha Christie: archaeology; she often traveled with her second husband to various digs through the Middle East (it’s actually where they met).
Victor Hugo: drawing; he often used drawing as his creative outlet when he became a politician
Mark Twain: scrapbooking and inventing; he was rumored to collect as much as he could about his travels and his public appearances, keeping newspaper clippings and ticket stubs. He was so into his scrapbooking that he invented a self-adhesive page to keep his items on.
Ernest Hemingway: outdoorsman; this is no surprise that the man who often wrote about hunting big game and deep-sea fishing would also pursue these activities himself.
J.R.R. Tolkien: conlang (constructing languages); he was so adept at conlang that he actually invented the fairy language used in the Lord of the Rings.
H.G. Wells: war games; he was so into war-gaming that he wrote a guide book that is still used by many to this day
Emily Dickenson: baking; while not an unusual hobby it is for one who was a self-proclaimed shut-in yet lowered a basket of treats daily from her window to the children who passed by her house.
