How’s your December going, y’all? Are you being swept up in the craziness of the holiday season? Are all of your presents bought, wrapped, and under the tree? Or do you wait until Christmas Eve to do that? What about the stocking? You’ve got that taken care of, right? Don’t worry if you’re stumped about what to get the creative person in your life for their stocking. Why? Because this list of stocking stuffers for creatives is made just for you!
Several of these ideas can be found in the dollar store, which is excellent news in this current economy. You may need to head to a specialty store for a few others. I can vouch for these stocking stuffers for creatives, as I have used many of these in my husband’s stocking over the years. While I included a few links, they are not affiliate links, nor can I guarantee delivery in time before gift giving.
Washi Tape
Washi tape is a decorative tape that can be used to block off areas on a piece an artist doesn’t want to cover, much like painter’s tape. It is often easy to remove and doesn’t damage the paper. My husband typically uses it to hold the paper down while working on a watercolor painting, and he’s also incorporated it into a drawing.
Washi tape comes in assorted thicknesses, prints, and colors. You can buy it as a single roll or in collections of three, five, six, eight, and more rolls.
Small Notebook or Sketchbook
I love notebooks—they may be a bit of an addiction. They’re great for carrying around in a backpack or purse without taking up too much space, and they’re perfect for jotting down random ideas when inspiration strikes. I take one to work, and it’s one of the first things I pull out of my bag daily. Mine is full of blog post ideas. It’s also where I jot down random things like a packing list before my trip in May. There are also a ton of to-do lists.
My husband carries one in his day-off bag in case a random idea strikes. Some days, he’ll use it to doodle or rough draft a drawing he’s thinking about.
Pens, Markers, Colored Pencils
Pens are another addiction of mine! A couple of years ago, I received a fountain pen for Christmas, and it’s possibly one of my favorite pens of all time. My husband has found assorted pens and markers in his stocking. From regular gel pens to fine liners in assorted colors to alcohol markers in a particular color palette, they are all hits in his eyes!
Think of the recipient and what they like to do. You’re bound to find the perfect tool for them.
Pencils, Pencil Sharpener, Erasers
I lumped these three together and separated them from the pens because they are different. These are foundational pieces in any creative person’s toolkit. My youngest daughter prefers mechanical pencils over yellow school pencils and, as such, has often received refills in her stocking for those.
Anyone who has spent time around a creative person knows there is no such thing as too many erasers. Some are better than others, so it may be best to find out what they prefer.
Paint and Paintbrushes
Last year, I found a couple of small travel palettes of watercolor paints and put them in my husband’s stocking. He was so excited to see them and uses them almost daily. Along with the watercolor paints, he prefers water pens to traditional brushes. To see what I mean, you can find some water pens here.
If your creative person uses traditional paintbrushes, I suggest you be very selective. Some of the cheap ones are, in fact, very cheaply made and will only cause frustration. That said, some of the brushes used the most in my house came from the dollar store after carefully examining the bristles.
ModPodge
A few years ago, I found small bottles of ModPodge that fit perfectly in my husband’s stocking. The average bottle of ModPodge is around 16oz (473 mL), but the small ones I found were around 2oz (59 mL). My husband was surprised to see such small bottles but was happy because the bigger ones often get messy before he uses them.
Glue
Yes, glue! It can be messy, but it doesn’t have to be. There are assorted varieties of glue that you can stuff in a stocking: white glue, school glue sticks, and hot glue sticks. You could also give super glue or Gorilla glue if they need heavy-duty adhesives.
Binder Clips
Hear me out! Binder clips can hold the paper down on a board or easel. If your creative person likes to build model kits or miniatures, they can help hold pieces together while the glue sets. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, you can find them here.
Ruler
A basic ruler can be a great stocking stuffer for any creative person. My husband constantly loses his ruler, and he has several! He prefers metal rulers, as they tend to withstand abuse better than wood and plastic.
Another measuring tool he likes to use is a circle template. It has markings on the outside like a regular ruler, but on the inside, there are a variety of plastic circles cut to help make perfect circles. You can find one here.
Scissors or Craft Knife
Name a creative person who doesn’t use scissors or a craft knife. Exactly! Everyone needs a good pair of scissors for their creative endeavors.
A craft knife is perfect for fine-detail cutting, like building miniatures. My husband has one with a ceramic blade, which he loves. The only issue with the ceramic blade is that it may cut the cutting surface.
That’s ten stocking stuffers for creatives. Did you find anything here that you hope to see in your stocking? Or to put in someone else’s stocking? What are some great stocking stuffers for creatives that you can think of?
