The Widow’s Guide to Dead Bastards by Jessica Waite

  • Genre: Nonfiction, Memoir
  • Anticipated Release Date: July 30, 2024

A widow’s life is turned upside down when she uncovers the truth about her late husband in this lyrical, witty, and deeply moving memoir of tragedy and betrayal.

In the midst of mourning her husband’s sudden death, writer Jessica Waite discovered shocking secrets that undermined everything she thought she knew about the man she’d loved and trusted. From uncovered affairs to drug use and a pornography addiction, Waite was overwhelmed reconciling this devastating information with her new reality as a widowed single mom. Then, to further complicate matters, strange, inexplicable coincidences forced her to consider whether her husband was reaching back from beyond the grave.

With her signature candor and unflinching honesty, Waite details her tumultuous love story and the pain of adjusting to the new normal she built for herself and her son. A riveting, difficult, and surprisingly beautiful story, The Widow’s Guide to Dead Bastards is also a lyrical exploration of grief, mental health, single parenthood, and betrayal that demonstrates that the most moving love stories aren’t perfect—they’re flawed and poignantly real.

For decades, Kit and her family must keep on the move to conceal her secret and protect her from the unwanted attention of Nazi scientists, nosy doctors, Big Pharma, and the insatiable news media that is always hunting for the next sensational story.

When Kit finally reaches her teens and can pass for an adult, she must decide whether she wants to stay perpetually on the run or stay put and form lasting ties. The only problem is Will Katzen, whose life—first as a baby, then as a boy, and then as a man—keeps intersecting with hers, complicating every instinct she has to flee or to love.

But he’s been placed in charge of an important merger with a company that values family above all else and needs to show them that he’s settled down. With a woman who Will is beginning to care about much more than he could have anticipated.

As Lexi gets a taste of Will’s glamorous world and the pair keeps up the pretense of their fake engagement for the press, they decide to see where a more casual relationship takes them out of the spotlight. Poutine: A Deep-Friend Road Trip of Discovery by Justin Giovannetti Lamothe

  • Genre: Nonfiction, Memoir
  • Anticipated Release Date: September 28, 2024
  • Note: All of this information is from the publisher’s website; the title leads to Douglas & McIntyre’s website.

While searching for the origins of Canada’s most famous fried dish, journalist Justin Giovannetti Lamothe finds a reflection not only of the country’s intricate history but also of his own neglected cultural roots. The recipe is deceptively simple—fried potatoes, cheese curds, gravy—but the story behind it is as rich and complex as Canada itself. Poutine is the closest thing we have to a national dish. As its popularity has spread across the country and beyond, it has become what the baguette is to France: a kind of national symbol, as immediately Canadian as the toque, beaver or hockey puck.

Yet the odd, winding history of poutine has never been written—until now. Following lore about the dish’s rise from the roadside chip wagons of rural Quebec, award-winning journalist Justin Giovannetti Lamothe tells a story that mirrors the growth of modern Canada and the shifting cultural gap between La Belle Province and its English-speaking neighbors. As the son of an anglophone mother and a francophone father, Giovannetti Lamothe is perfectly suited to the task: much of his childhood was spent on the outskirts of Trois-Rivières, a stone’s throw from the region where—according to local lore—poutine was invented sometime in the 1950s or ’60s. As he tracks poutine’s origins and wanderings, he also reveals the evolving nature of his relationship to his father and, with this, to the Québécois heritage he once drifted away from.

After reading the delectable Poutine, you’ll never see—or taste—this humbly famous food in quite the same way again.

  1. Lots I haven’t heard of before and I thought A Grim Reaper’s Guide to Catching a Killer looked interesting even before I noticed the character’s age. I need a 42 year old for a Popsugar challenge prompt! Perfect.

  2. I haven’t heard of any of these but I do love a good holiday romance/read so I’m gonna keep my eye out for these festive ones 😍 I hope you enjoy these whenever you get to them!

  7. I would have added Nina’s book to my list if I had known there was another one! Excellent, I loved Hench! Thanks for dropping by my post!

      Pam

  8. What an awesome list! I always love coming to your blog because I find such cool books to add to my TBR. This time I added The Leap Year Gene; it just sounded too good to pass up. So many of these sound great, I hope you love them. I’ve started noticing when I read Canadian authors more often now because of posts like this.

    1. That’s why I try to draw focus to them. There are a few authors that everyone knows, but there are so many that people don’t know about. Several of these books are published by the big names, but they just don’t seem to get traction outside of Canada. And I am now making it my mission to expose you to more fantastic books! LOL!

      1. Yay! You won’t get any complaints for me, and I’m really enjoying the Canadian authors I’ve read that you introduced me to.
