Happy Thursday! Halloween is only a few days away, so I knew I had to do a Halloween Creatures tag. It’s the law or something. Anyway, I found this tag at Read All The Things and Nily. You should check out their posts when you get the chance.

Halloween Creatures Book Tag

I will try to stick with the books I have read in 2021.

WITCH: A MAGICAL CHARACTER OR BOOK?

Should I go with this as an actual magical character or book? Or one that I found magical? Decisions, decisions!

I’ll go with a book with a magical element, but one that I found magical. Yes, it is a middle-grade book, but Tilly and the Bookwanderers is a wonderfully magical read. Set in a bookstore, it’s about a girl who can travel into books. Yes, please!

WEREWOLF: A PERFECT BOOK TO READ AT NIGHT?

Isn’t every book perfect to read at night? I read what I want when I want. But I will say that if the book is too graphic, spooky, or scary, I will not read it at night. Why? Because I like to sleep! Ha! Ha!

FRANKENSTEIN: A BOOK THAT TRULY SHOCKED YOU?

This book didn’t shock me because it was shocking in a thriller-type way. It shocked me because it educated me about something I knew almost nothing about: eating disorders. The Girls at 17 Swann Street by Yara Zgheib is an own-voices story about a young woman and her struggles with anorexia.

THE DEVIL: A DARK, EVIL CHARACTER?

A dark, evil character? Bert from The Flood Girls is pretty despicable. He hated his girlfriend’s son because he was unlike a “normal” 12-year-old boy. I won’t say more because I don’t want to spoil the book.

The Girl with the Louding Voice has multiple dark, evil characters. Between her husband, Chief, and Big Madam, it is incredible that Adunni survives.

GRIM REAPER: A CHARACTER THAT NEVER SHOULD HAVE DIED?

I’ll leave the book cover. Anything more would spoil the book for those who haven’t read it. If you have, you’ll understand.

ZOMBIE: A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HUNGRY FOR MORE?

I have read the first book in three different series that have left me wanting more.

GARGOYLE: A CHARACTER YOU WOULD PROTECT AT ALL COSTS?

This was an easy one! Yes, the ending made me cry ugly, but I would do whatever I could to protect Lenni! The poor thing has been through so much; she wants to know she was loved.

VAMPIRE: A BOOK THAT SUCKED THE LIFE OUT OF YOU?

I could have quickly gone with a book I read in high school for this one. But I didn’t because I’m sticking with the books I read this year. Gone With the Wind is over 900 pages and could have been done with some serious editing! This book felt tedious, but I knew I had to do it to say I read it. I will never reread it, partly because I don’t reread books but also because it drags on.

GHOST: A BOOK THAT STILL HAUNTS YOU?

Five Little Indians isn’t a book you quickly forget about or move past. You learn about the abuse some people endured while forced to attend school and how that shaped their lives.

DEMON: A BOOK THAT SCARED YOU?

I can’t say that any books I’ve read this year have scared me. I’m not the kind of person to read scary books.

SKELETON: A CHARACTER YOU HAVE A BONE TO PICK WITH?

I have a bone to pick with some characters, but I narrowed it down to James in Cynthia Starts a Band. How dare you treat Eleanor like you did! You’ve known her since she was sixteen; why would you allow her to suffer like that? While I’m at it, what about you, Jenny? You aren’t exactly innocent, either!

MUMMY: A BOOK YOU WOULD PRESERVE THROUGHOUT TIME?

Can’t I preserve all books? Instead, I’ll share a book I think should get more love because it’s been pushed to the side and forgotten. That book is The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick. Arthur Pepper finds himself learning more about his wife a year after she passed away than he had in the many years they were married.

CREEPY DOLL: A COVER TOO SCARY TO LOOK AT?

The cover isn’t too scary, but it is pretty dark!

Monster Mash: If you want to answer these questions, consider yourself tagged.

And that is the Halloween Creatures Book Tag! Did my answers surprise you? How would you have answered the questions? Let me know in the comments. Happy Halloween!
