Get a Life, Chloe Brown is the first book in the Brown Sisters trilogy by Talia Hibbert. It was first published in November 2019 by Avon. This book features a chronically ill female lead and a male lead who isn’t full of toxic masculinity. The book has a trigger warning at the beginning of the book from the author, and there are many steamy scenes.
Synopsis
Chloe Brown is a computer geek who is big in making plans and lists. One day, she decides she needs to change the way she lives her life. Instead of always living in fear and hiding due to her illness, she wants to live the life she used to have.
Redford “Red” Morgan is a sexy tattooed artist who happens to live in the same apartment complex as Chloe.
Could he help her find her get a life?
Positives
I love the representation in the book. Chloe suffers from a chronic illness, one that many people think is all in her head, so she suffers in silence. I feel that the way this is addressed in the book and is such a vital part of who she is was handled wonderfully.
At the beginning of the book, Talia Hibbert added a note mentioning a possible trigger warning. I love that she did this. Not many books offer content or trigger warnings, often leaving the reader shocked when they come across something that may potentially be harmful to them. In this case, it is about the after-effects of an abusive relationship.
Negatives
While I like Red overall, there are a few parts where I have issues. First, let me say, I know it is a steamy romance, so there is bound to be a lot of sexy time in the book. My issue was the almost immature behavior of Red. He is a grown man in his 30s, yet he wants to masturbate. And I mean a lot! He even had a wet dream. Do guys still have them when they get out of puberty?
Not that I really mind, but is it so difficult for authors to name the town their story is set in? I know it’s not in London, but it is in England. But where in England? You can even give me a fictional town name; that would work too.
My Opinions
I enjoyed reading the book. It took me about 4 days to get through as I was a bit busy with other things. But I think this one could easily be read in 1-2 days. Even better, read it while at the beach or even by the pool! Just be warned, there are some seriously steamy bits! I may not look at tent camping the same way again.
That said, I didn’t see what the hype was all about. I may read the other two books in the trilogy, as I am curious about the representation in those books.
