It’s a new month, and I really want to try and get better about doing these book tags. I started the year off really well, but then I just stopped! I have no idea why, and I’m sorry. I will try to do better. The first book tag I want to do this month is, Are You a Book Snob? I have always thought that I am not a book snob. I don’t judge people by the books they read or if they even read. But I shall see after answering these few questions. I found this book tag over at Eleanor Sophie Writes.

FORMAT SNOB

You can only choose one format in which to read books for the rest of your life. So which one do you choose: physical books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

I would have to go with physical books. Their smell. The way they give me something to hold on to once the story is over, and I either need to sob over the ending (don’t judge me), or I want to hug the characters (again, don’t judge me!)

I have never had luck with eBooks, but I have had recently started enjoying audiobooks. It’s a great way to encourage me to go for a walk; I need to find better headphones. Does anyone have any suggestions?

ADAPTATION SNOB

Do you always read the book before watching the film/TV show?

It depends if I know if the book exists. There are way too many books in existence for me to know all of them. But if I know the book exists, and it seems of interest, I’ll try to read it before watching anything. That said, the world won’t end if I see the movie before the book (if I even read the book).

SHIP SNOB

Would you date or marry a non-reader?

I’ve been married for over 20 years to a man who isn’t a huge reader. He may read a book a month or less. That doesn’t bother me because he has interests and hobbies that I don’t share with him. He will buy me at least one book for each gift-giving day (Valentine’s Day, anniversary, birthday, Christmas), and to me, that shows he pays attention to what I like. I have also given him a book if it is one that I think he will like. For example, he enjoys video games and such. So for our anniversary, I gave him a copy of Warcross by Marie Lu, and he seems to be enjoying it.

GENRE SNOB

You have to ditch one genre – never to be read again for the rest of your life. Which one do you ditch?

This is an easy one for me. Horror! Why? Because I have no desire to read it. My mind likes to take horror stuff to heart, thus making me paranoid for quite a while. As a result, I won’t even watch horror movies. Okay, I have seen Christine, but it was like in the middle of the day, so I had time to get it out of my mind before bed.

UBER GENRE SNOB

You can only choose to read from one genre for the rest of your life. Which genre do you choose?

Only one? That’s so unfair because I love to read almost all genres. But I guess if I HAVE to pick just one, I will go with contemporary. In that way, I have still read a cross-section of books. I have read contemporary books that have components of mystery and romance. It just means I have to give up my historical fiction.

COMMUNITY SNOB

Which genre do you think receives the most snobbery from the bookish community?

From within the bookish community? I don’t think there really is one genre that receives snobbish attitudes. People have their preferred form of books and tend to stay that way. I think the biggest thing I’ve seen people in the bookish community be snobbish about is whether audiobooks count as reading.

SNOBBERY RECIPIENT

Have you ever been snubbed for something that you have been reading or for reading in general?

I’ve had people in the past judge me for what I was reading. Once I was in 6th grade, and I asked a teacher what a word meant in the book I was reading. She told me that I shouldn’t be reading Homer’s Odyssey and should find something more age-appropriate. The other time I was judged, I was in 11th grade and pulled a Hardy Boys book out of my backpack. Some of my classmates commented about how the book was for little kids and that I must be slow if I was reading it in high school. Mind you, this was in AP US History, so obviously, I was not slow.

See, I was right; I’m not really a snob. I try not to judge others for what they’re reading if they read at all. I will ask them about what they are reading but try not to judge. The world is already a judgy place, and I don’t want to add to it. Reading is about escaping your world; why should I judge you for what you’re reading? What about you? Are you a book snob?
