Happy Thursday, y’all! Can you believe it’s the last Thursday before Christmas? Yikes! I hope you have your shopping finished, or at least planned. This week, I’m doing a Christmas stocking book tag I found over at ZeZee With Books. It felt like the perfect tag this close to Christmas. Who’s ready to open their stocking?
Like my other book tags this month, I will focus on books I read this year. All book titles will take you to Goodreads.
When you get up on Christmas morning, your stocking is full! You take it down and start to unwrap the treats inside.
The first thing you see is an orange!
Which book is refreshing and vibrant, both inside and out?
I’m not 100% certain I would consider this book refreshing and vibrant, but it gave me warm fuzzies, and I’m going with that.
- Title: The LIttlest Library by Poppy Alexander
- Genre: Contemporary, Romance
- Release Date: March 2021
Next is a bag of chocolate coins. (Yum)
Which book have you recently bought that was a little expensive but worth the price?
Please don’t laugh, but I spent $25 on this book—a bit less because I bought it using a birthday coupon—but I rarely buy myself books. It’s a fun concept because it’s an advent calendar that’s a book.
- Title: A Heart for Christmas by Sophie Jomain
- Genre: Romance, Holiday
- Release Date: September 2024
You also pull out a bath bomb.
Tell us about a book that had explosive action scenes.
I wouldn’t say there were explosive action scenes, though there were a few, but there were quite a few twists and turns. And plenty of action!
- Title: Holmes, Marple, & Poe by James Patterson & Brian Sitts; aka Holmes, Margaret, & Poe
- Genre: Mystery
- Release Date: January 2024
Next is a pack of playing cards.
Which series won you over?
While it’s only the first book, I loved it and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
- Title: Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
- Genre: Fantasy
- Release Date: August 2023
You also get a candle.
Which character is a symbol of hope in their story?
For me, this was a no-brainer! Why? Because all Benji does is try to make those around him better.
- Title: Benji Zeb is a Ravenous Werewolf by Deke Moulton
- Genre: Middle Grade, Fantasy
- Release Date: July 2024
There are socks inside, too.
Is there a book that you think really encompasses all the distinctive tropes of its genre?
Does this book meet all of the tropes of a mystery? If not, then I don’t know about the trope. Add in the fact that it’s also historical fiction, and there are more tropes.
- Title: Death at the Sanatorium by Ragnar Jónasson
- Genre: Historical Mystery
- Release Date: January 2019 (in Icelandic); September 2024 (in English)
There’s also a notebook.
Which author’s writing process do you find most interesting/inspiring?
I’m unsure if I’m going with this one because she’s my favorite author or if I enjoy her writing process.
- Title: Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie
- Genre: Mystery
- Release Date: March 1935
To go with the notebook, there’s a fancy pen.
Is there a book or a series that you’d change if you’d written it yourself?
This book had so much promise! If given the chance, I wonder if I could make it live up to that promise.
- Title: The Husbands by Holly Gramazio
- Genre: Contemporary, Magical Realism
- Release Date: April 2024
There’s also a small bedside clock.
Which book took you a long time to pick up but was worth it in the end?
I added this book to my TBR in 2018 and got a physical copy in 2020. In the end, I listened to the audiobook from the library! LOL!
- Title: The Alice Network by Kate Quinn
- Genre: Historical Fiction
- Release Date: June 2017
You reach in to pull out the last gift, and it’s… a lump of coal? You’re a little disappointed. But you look closer and realize there’s a seam running through the coal. You crack it open, and sitting inside is a tiny golden gem.
Tell us about a book that surprised you in some way.
The book I picked for this is one I added to a seasonal TBR because it has the lowest average rating, currently 2.77. I enjoyed it and gave it a 4-star rating.
- Title: The Heroines by Eileen Favorite
- Genre: Historical Fiction, Magical Realism
- Release Date: December 2007
